Summary

Support informal caregivers by spending time with a loved one who has dementia, offering companionship and simple activities to give caregivers a short break.

Detailed description

This project was created to support informal caregivers—family members or friends—who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

As you can imagine, providing this kind of care can be both emotionally and physically exhausting. As a buddy, you will help by offering companionship and simple activities (like talking, playing a game, or going for a short walk) to the person with dementia for a few hours. This gives their caregiver a much-needed break to run errands, go to the doctor, or simply rest.

There are no set dates and times; it all depends on when the informal caregivers might need a buddy. The idea is that whenever there is a request from an informal caregiver, I will post it in the buddy WhatsApp group chat. If you're available and willing, you can respond, after which I will match you with the informal caregiver.

You choose how often you’re available, and no medical experience is needed. All you need is patience, kindness, and a willingness to make a difference. We will, however, organize an onboarding session at the WYCCF in St. John's to give you some basic information and offer you the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have!
